Everyone knows that the Montérégie region is rich in food products. For this reason, some might think it is best to wait for summer or fall to visit the region. Make sure you do not wait! There are so many things to do in this region, even if spring often is the “low season” for the tourism industry. Instead of mounting your bike, take your car to ride along the kilometres of road. Follow the itinerary you prepared, or let your car guide you wherever you want to go in the region.
Pleasures to See and Taste
There are no better way than following a tourist route to fully take in the flavours and customs of a region. With its 197 km and the Adirondacks in the background, the Circuit du Paysan stretches along the Canada/US border. Along this road, you will discover farms, antique dealers, maple groves, museums as well as the historical and religious heritage of the Montérégie. The Route des cidres, for its part, stretches for 298 km and offers more than just orchards and vineyards. If you stop to visit a few farms, you will discover the art of transforming apple into cider and grapes into wine. Along the road, you will also have the chance to see the 23 maple groves of the region, which, like those of other regions in Quebec, produce maple syrup. Take the time to stop in one of the sugar shacks opened to the public and learn more about the methods used to transform maple sap into syrup or taffy. Eating sugar and sweets once a year has never hurt anyone!
History Under all its Forms
Once on the road, take the time to appreciate all the wealth of the region. The religious heritage, like the churches of different denominations, which built by the Scottish, the French and the Loyalists, gave the landscape small chapels or larger churches like the cocathédrale Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue-Chapelle-Marie-Rose. The history that these monuments bear is worth the detour. Speaking of history, the Montérégie region is dotted with numerous museums, interpretation centres and historical sites. If you are interested in the history of First Nations, you can stop at the Maison des cultures amérindiennes. If you wish to learn more about the history of the region, you will certainly like to learn more about the Patriotes history at the Maison nationale des Patriotes. You can also visit the Battle of the Châteauguay National Historic Site of Canada and the parc écologique de la Pointe-du-Buisson, which will both teach you about the important battles that took place in the region.
Everyone Outside
If you like nature, the Montérégie region offers you its diversified large spaces and parks for you to do all your favourite activities. At the Centre de la nature du Mont-Saint-Hilaire, you can enjoy the last centimetres of snow to go snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Snowboard and alpine skiing enthusiasts, for their part, can visit Mont Saint-Bruno. As for Arbraska, La Forêt des Aventures, it offers an aerial challenge course. For those who are looking for a funny event, participate in the Grenouille en Fête in Chambly in April. You will have the chance to observe a very peculiar competition with… divers!
