It’s Electrifying!

Beauharnois Generating Station
In 1929, the landscape surrounding Melocheville and Beauharnois was completely transformed by the building of a generating station. The Beauharnois Generating Station, which was built in three stages, is one of the largest of its kind in the world and has been in operation since 1932. After some major modernization works, its 38 generating units, which spread over almost one kilometre, are now powered by state-of-the-art technology. With these units, this station has become one of the most powerful Hydro-Québec’s generation stations.

Centrale de BeauharnoisThe guided tour of the station will give you the opportunity to see these generating units, to take in the art deco architecture of the building and to discover the history of electricity production through a 75-year-old facility. You can also climb on the roof of the station to admire the breathtaking and unique surrounding landscape.

Let’s hear about figures: the equivalent of the water contained in three Olympic pools go through the station every second and each year, 50,000 eels go through the fish ladder that was built for them.

The station opens its doors from the Journée nationale des patriotes (mid-May) to Labour Day (beginning of September). Each day, four 90-minute guided visits are offered for free.
