It’s Electrifying!

Beauharnois Generating Station

In 1929, the landscape surrounding Melocheville and Beauharnois was completely transformed by the construction of a generating station. Built in three stages the Beauharnois Generating Station is one of the largest of its kind in the world and has been operating since 1932. After some major modernisation works, the 38 generating units, spreading over almost one kilometre, are now powered by state-of-the-art technology. With these units, this station has become one of Hydro-Québec’s most powerful generating stations.

Centrale de Beauharnois © Hydro QuébecThe guided tour of the station will give you the opportunity to go inside these generating units, take in the art deco architecture of the building and discover the history of electricity production through a 75-year-old facility. You will also be able to climb on the rooftop of the station to have a look at the breathtaking and unique surrounding landscape.

You want to hear numbers? The equivalent of the water contained in three Olympic pools is passing through the station every second. And each year, 50,000 eels go through the fish ladder that was built for them.

The station opens its doors until the end of August. Each day, four 90-minute guided visits are offered for free.

Reservation necessary: guided visits in English and groups of 10 people and more Information and reservation: 1 800 365-5229
